How did I Learn?

I’ve been working on my photography skills for about 10 years. I have shot everything from live sports, to engagement portraits, to anniversary parties, to weddings. Photography is not my main occupation however. I’m a Project Manager and a dad, so photography is just something I love to do and that helps support my growing family.

So how did I get started? Well, it started with an impulse buy after a trip in Germany. I was so stoked by the *cool photos I took while traveling that I bought brand new DSLR with my life savings. For the next couple years, I jumped at every experiential shoot I could get my hands on. For instance, back in high school, I was on the yearbook crew for 3 years. My senior year at the small private school, I took 80+% of the photos in the yearbook, funny thing was, the only photo of me was my official head shot. You can say I was dedicated to my role as staff photographer. More recently, I’ve spent more of my time on individual, engagement, family portraits, events, and weddings.

What’s my style? It’s hard to say. Spontaneous may be a good way to put it. Most of my portrait experiences take place outside as I’m entirely partial to natural lighting. I have also found that performing shoots outside instills a sense of freedom in myself and the subject. Indoor shoots are not out of my range, however, and I’ve photographed many events and weddings in order to sharpen my skills. Speaking of skills: I’m constantly improving them and will never consider myself to have “arrived.” Some of my favorite photos of my photography career were partially accidental (as many photographers could relate to).
